From the moment you join us, you can choose from a wide range of activities, events, and specialist pathways designed to complement your studies and strengthen your future university or job applications. Taking part means you’ll meet new people beyond your classes, build lasting friendships, and create some of your best college memories.

Chess Society
The Chess Society is a welcoming and inclusive club for students of all skill levels — from complete beginners to experienced players. Our aim is to teach the fundamentals of chess, as well as advanced tactics and strategic thinking. Weekly sessions include guided lessons, puzzle-solving, friendly matches, and tournament play. Whether you're learning how the pieces move or sharpening your endgame, the Chess Society offers a fun and challenging environment to develop your skills and enjoy the game.
DofE (qualification)
DoE involves helping the community/environment; becoming fitter; developing new skills; planning, training for and completing a four-day walking expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.
Eco Schools Committee
Eco Schools is all about making sure that the college is as ‘green’ as possible and that we continue to cut our carbon footprint and do our bit for the planet. The Eco Schools Committee brings together students and staff to make important decisions. It also plays a vital role in helping to inform everyone how they can have a positive impact.
Since joining the programme, the college has achieved the Green Flag Award with Distinction twice in succession. We are looking to continue and build on this in 2025-26.
Joining the Eco Committee will give you direct experience of action planning, decision-making, negotiation, management and communications. You will be able to take on a specialist role that matches your particular interests.
We also work beyond the college with other schools and colleges and with local, national and international organisations.
Former student members of the Eco Committee say that it has helped them secure their university places and has even helped them embark on exciting career routes they hadn’t previously thought of.
The Eco Committee meets at least twice every half-term but members are expected to contribute to ongoing and new projects between meetings.
The meetings are mainly held on Tuesdays in session 6 (2.45 - 3.55 pm) with a few on Wednesdays at the same time. There are no lessons at this time.
The meetings in the Committee Room (M201).

Maths Society
An opportunity for you to apply your skills, stretch your imagination and challenge your mind. Each week, you will be presented with problems and questions, including inquisitive problems, codebreaking, cryptography, group activities and question chains. Some of what you see will be an extension to what you’re learning in lesson, the rest will be completely new knowledge.
Get involved in national competitions such mathsbombe, national cipher challenge and UKMT.
Eco Action
Interested in making a real difference for the environment both within college and beyond? Join our friendly Eco Action team. We meet every week to do practical, hands-on tasks and plan exciting events and campaigns in college. Recently our work has focused on wildlife habitat creation, treeplanting, growing fruit and veg, improving recycling and holding a special ocean-themed week.
Our meeting time is 11.30 am - 1 pm on Wednesdays and our base is the Committee Room (M201) though many meetings will be in the college grounds (weather dependent).
The first meeting will be Wednesday 10th September. For more information contact Jon McLeod

Euro Society
If you are European or interested in European history, culture and politics make sure to join our amazing community!
It looks great on a UCAS reference and job application, broadens your cultural awareness, helps you learn new languages, and is a fantastic way to meet new people.
Sessions include Spanish, Italian, French, German, culture, literature, wacky traditions, cinema, booking a holiday...and many more!
Student Union – Be the Voice of Change
Join the Student Union and make a real impact on college life! Represent your peers, lead campaigns, and work with college leaders to bring student ideas to life. Whether you're passionate about equality, events, or simply want your voice heard, this is your chance to build confidence, gain leadership experience, and shape our community from the inside out. We meet once a week after college.
Debating Society
Are you passionate about current affairs, politics,
and public debate? The Debating Society at
Blackpool Sixth is designed to help you develop
your oracy skills, political awareness, and
confidence by tackling real-world issues head-on. By debating real-world issues, students are introduced to key controversies at the top of the public agenda.
Student Librarians
As a student librarian, you'll help fellow students find books, articles, and hidden research gems that support their academic journey. You'll get creative by designing eye-catching displays and promoting events that bring the library to life. Behind the scenes, you'll play a key role in keeping the library running smoothly and efficiently. Along the way, you'll develop valuable real-world skills in customer service, organisation, and technology. Best of all, you’ll be part of a fun, supportive, and inspiring team that makes the library a welcoming space for everyone.
The academies usually run on Wednesday afternoons but may also run outside of core college hours.
Sometimes enrichment influences your course choice, and that’s OK. Studying subjects you are interested in is a sure route to success in higher education or employment. Check out our college courses at Blackpool Sixth here to find out more about our courses. Don’t miss out on our upcoming events, either! Make sure you head to our events at Blackpool Sixth page to see what’s coming up.
