Blackpool Sixth students celebrate GCSE English and Maths resit success

The new year got off to a brilliant start at Blackpool Sixth, with students receiving their GCSE English and Maths resit results. For many, these results marked a significant milestone, enabling them to achieve the grades they needed to move forward with confidence in their studies and future plans.

The outcomes were genuinely impressive. A substantial number of our students achieved grades at or above grade 4, with many making significant progress from their original GCSE results. Even more remarkably, some students achieved grades 6 and 7, which is an outstanding achievement for resit entries. These results reflect not only academic improvement, but also determination, resilience and a belief that progress is possible.

Among those celebrating was Thomas O’Neill, who joined Blackpool Sixth two years ago on the Level 2 Foundation Programme and is now studying a Level 3 (A level equivalent) course. He achieved a grade 5 in GCSE English. He commented, “I am excited I can finally focus solely on my performing arts course.”

Darcey Williams also had plenty to celebrate. After moving to the UK from Australia, she had not previously had the opportunity to take GCSE Maths. Sitting the exam for the first time at Blackpool Sixth last November, she achieved a pass. Darcey said, “Moving over from Australia and missing my GCSEs, I knew it was important for me to get my qualifications here at college. I am so happy to have passed my Maths test in the first attempt. This is going to help me after college when applying for jobs as it will improve my CV.”

Another standout result came from Sophie Fletcher, who achieved an amazing grade 7 in GCSE English, four grades higher than her previous result from high school. She had some great advice for fellow students, saying they should do as much revision as possible so that you “leave the doubt outside of the exam room."

These individual successes sit alongside some exceptional overall outcomes. Over 50% of Blackpool Sixth students achieved grade 5 or above in GCSE English, while GCSE Maths results were 15% above the national post-16 average.

Blackpool Sixth Principal Nicola Craven said, "Congratulations to our amazing GCSE English and Maths students; we are extremely proud of their remarkable achievements on their November entry exam results. They continue to significantly outperform against national rates. Successfully achieving these important qualifications will support them to thrive in future study and work. Huge congratulations to you students and thank you to your wonderful teachers!"

Head of English and Modern Foreign Languages Natalie Collister commented, “Another incredible set of November GCSE English re-sit results at Blackpool Sixth, with over 50% of students achieving grade 5+, widening their opportunities and experiences now and for the future. Well done!”

Head of Maths Joanne Casey added, “A huge congratulations to our students on achieving GCSE maths results that are 15% above the national post-16 average. This achievement reflects the hard work and determination of our students, combined with the dedication of our teaching team, to deliver amazing outcomes.”

GCSE resits are not easy, but these results show what can be achieved with the right support, commitment and mindset. For students who are given a second chance or sitting an exam for the first time, progress is possible. Huge congratulations to every student who achieved their goal, and to the staff who supported them along the way.
