Eco Schools Committee

Blackpool Sixth is part of the international Eco Schools which aims to engage young people of all ages in education and action to protect and improve the environment. 

Eco Schools is based around ten key topics which are:

Eco Committee

In the summer term of 2023, a college Eco Committee was formed consisting of student and staff representatives. This committee carried out an environmental review covering the ten themes. A summary of this will soon be published here and then the committee will work on an action plan for 2023-24, focusing on 3 key projects.

The Eco Committee meets two to three times every half-term on Mondays 4 - 5 pm in the Committee Room.

The college also has a very well established and dynamic environmental group which is run as part of the 6Xtra programme. This group focuses on practical actions linked to sustainability and the environment.

Since the formation of the group in November 2020, it has:

• Planted 600 native trees on the college site and created a new orchard area
• Planted wildflowers around the college site and vegetables in the college’s polytunnel
• Made and installed 20 bird boxes around the site
• Established a ‘kitchen garden’ growing vegetables and herbs
• Carried out surveys of students’ views on what they would like to see improved about the college’s environmental contributions and performance and discussed the findings with the college’s senior leadership team
• Organised and delivered two Fylde Coast Climate Conferences see: https://www.blackpoolsixth.ac.uk/fycc23/
• Set up an Instagram account promoting positive environmental actions and awareness, as well as sharing images celebrating local wildlife and habitats
• Carried out large-scale collections of secondhand clothes for charities, including a very large collection for Ukrainian refugees
• Raised money for Reserva Land Trust, a young people’s charity helping to re-create rainforest areas in Ecuador
• Our Chair in 2021-22 was part of the Blackpool Youth Climate Assembly and helped to organise an international conference on young people and the environment. She also appeared on BBC Radio 4
• Members of the group acted as hedgehog ‘fosterers’ for Hedgehog Rescue Blackpool
• Created a ‘5 A Day for the Environment’ campaign to engage the whole college in simple daily activities to help the environment
