COURSE OVERVIEW

Health and social care is a platform to enter nursing and allied health professions, education, and social work. The course involves a range of topics, work-related projects, and up to 80 hours of optional placement experience (placement opportunities will be dependent on approval from your other subjects). This placement can be across a range of settings, and where possible, tailored to your future career, including (but not exclusive to):

  • Local primary schools
  • GP surgeries
  • SEN schools
  • Behavioural management units
  • Local care providers


All of which will prepare you for your future studies and career.

Pearson – Edexcel

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Standard vocational entry criteria.
Completion of DBS check.
Some nursing/teaching courses at university may require grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths, English language and science. Primary teaching requires at least a 4 in Maths, English and Science (44).

Why study BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care (double) at Blackpool Sixth?

Our students achieve excellent high grades and a 100% pass rate. We also invite a variety of guest speakers, including Highfurlong School, Starbuddies (breastfeeding awareness), nurses from Blackpool Victoria Hospital (how to get into nursing), Wyre and Fylde Children’s Centres, Health Promotion and Sexual/Domestic Violence training, how to get into teaching and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Completing a Diploma in Health and Social Care will help you develop vital skills when working within the health and social care sector, such as general nursing, social work, and teaching. The Diploma in Health and Social Care can be paired with one other singular course, which can be tailored to suit your potential future career. Other courses that often complement the Diploma in Health and Social Care are Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, and Applied Science

We also offer additional programmes such as first aid training, clinical skills workshops, and mental health workshops.

How will I be taught?

You will learn using a variety of excellent teaching and learning methods. Teachers will use real-life examples to bring learning to life, your lessons will be engaging and will involve technology, videos, and interactive and collaborative learning techniques. We aim to continuously enhance your learning through academic trips, guest speakers, and investigations into contemporary issues in the news relating to current Health and Social Care practice.

Teacher expertise

Teachers have a range of specialisms within health and social care including; dementia care, nursing, caring for those with developmental disorders, clinical practice/skills, sexual health, early years, social work, and first aid, and have taught a range of qualifications including health, science, psychology and sport. Within the team, teachers maintain excellent community links with employers to offer a wide variety of work placement opportunities, they also examine for multiple qualifications, including A Level psychology, level 2 and 3 BTEC health & social care, and T level exams as well as the extended project qualification.

3 units are externally assessed (a combination of exams and controlled assessment)
5 units are internally assessed through coursework.
