Blackpool Sixth student, Becca Dowling, has won a major fashion award after working with fellow students to create a dress using recycled paper.
The competition was organised by JCA, London’s newest fashion academy. JCA is spearheaded by luxury footwear pioneer Professor Jimmy Choo OBE whose designs have famously been worn by Princess Diana and Carrie Bradshaw.
Becca from Blackpool Sixth is currently studying BTEC Level 3 Fashion Design, Marketing and Promotion and with classmates Fay Tomlinson and Eloise Alvarez created a stunning sustainable dress made from recycled paper.
Becca will be invited down to the academy for an induction into the courses, facilities, and opportunities available at the JCA: London Fashion Academy, as well as the opportunity to work with Jimmy’s first tutor who will nurture the students on their journey in becoming the next designer to the stars.
Becca commented, ‘The brief for this project was to work as a group to create a wearable garment made from recycled paper. We worked with various new techniques to create interesting paper samples before working together to design a final piece, inspired by Bae Szenfeld, a fashion designer who works with paper to create exciting innovative designs. I was ecstatic when I received my brief of the paper dress.
We used old magazines, tape and staples to create this piece. It allowed me to explore my creative flare and discover new skills along the way. My teammates Fay, Eloise and I collaborated, bringing all of our design ideas together to come up with one final design idea. Then we took the garment to our photography studio where we took these shots, considering styling, hair and make up. We worked really hard on this and I’m thankful to say that all the effort paid off.
We went to a UCAS ‘Design your future event’ in November and met the JCA team. I was really excited to enter their competition at this event and will be keeping an eye out for other future competitions! I would just like to say a huge thank you to JCA for recognising our work and I am so excited at the prospect of visiting their Mayfair campus. I love the hands-on side of fashion and I am working on gaining myself a place on a fashion design and textiles degree in the future. I hope to move on and design clothes for well known companies across the UK or even the world.’
