BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care (Triple)
COURSE oVERVIEW
Health and Social Care is a platform to enter a multitude of career opportunities, including nursing and allied health professions, education, social work and social care roles.
The course will develop your skills and allow you to apply yourself to your preferred career pathway. You will cover a wide range of topics, work related projects and up to 350 hours placement experience across a range of settings including (but not exclusive to):
- Blackpool Victoria hospital
- Local primary schools
- GP surgeries
- SEN schools
- Behavioural management units
- Local care providers
Across the 2 year program you will have the opportunity to attend up to 6 different placements allowing you to branch out into different sectors and develop your workplace skills. All of which will prepare you for your future studies and career.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Standard vocational entry criteria including a grade 4 in science.
Completion of DBS check.
Some nursing/midwifery courses at university may require grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths, English language and/or science.
Why study BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care (Triple) at Blackpool Sixth?
We offer two pathways in Health and Social Care. At the end of the first year, all students will select which of the two pathways they would like to specialise in: Health Studies Cadetship (you must study the Level 3 Extended Diploma course for this) or General Health and Social Care studies.
How will I be taught?
We offer two pathways in health and social care: Health Studies Cadetship (you must study the Level 3 Extended Diploma course for this) or general health and social care studies. In your first year, students will complete two block placements of up to 190 hours work experience.
All students will have the opportunity to complete their first placement at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with additional programmes such as first aid training, clinical skills and mental health workshops. In the second year, some students with specialise in the Health Studies Cadetship programme, working in partnership with NHS teaching hospitals and other clinical settings. Students on this programme will volunteer two days a week across multiple clinical settings throughout the academic year.
We also invite in a variety of guest speakers, including: Highfurlong School, Starbuddies (breastfeeding awareness), nurses from Blackpool Victoria Hospital (how to get into nursing), Wyre and Fylde Children’s centres, health promotion and sexual/domestic violence training, how to get into teaching and neuro linguistic programming. Students on our Level 3 Extended Diploma achieve excellent upper high grades and 100% high grades and pass rate.

Teacher expertise
Teachers have a range of specialisms within health and social care including; dementia care, nursing, caring for those with developmental disorders, clinical practice/skills, sexual health, early years, social work, first aid and have taught a range of qualifications including health, science, psychology and sport. Within the team, teachers maintain excellent community links with employers to offer a wide variety of work placement opportunities, they also examine for multiple qualifications, including A level psychology, Level 2 and 3 BTEC health & social care and T level exams as well as the extended project qualification.

4 units are externally assessed (a combination of exams and controlled assessment)
8 units are internally assessed through coursework

- What is the Health Studies Cadetship?
Students will have the opportunity to undertake up to 410 hours of clinical work experience in various settings in their second year of study. Alongside this, students will complete specialist science units (Microbiology for Health Science and Genetics) which will assist them in their university applications for competitive courses such as Paramedic Sciences, Midwifery and specialist Nursing. Learners will also benefit from an enhanced curriculum that focuses on skills development and includes first aid training, clinical skills and mental health workshops; ensuring that our learners have relevant industry experience and are excellent practitioners with transferable skills.
- What is general health and social care studies?
Students will have the opportunity to undertake an additional 80 hours of work experience in their second year of study that will be tailored to their potential future career. Students will complete units that will help them in future careers such as general nursing, social work, youth work and education. Students will also benefit from an enhanced curriculum that focuses on skills development and includes first aid training, clinical skills and mental health workshops ensuring that our learners stand out from the crowd and are excellent practitioners with a set of transferable skills.
- Employability
All students must complete a minimum of 100 hours work experience for the course. These hours are completed during the first placement opportunity during the first year of study.
Students will also get the opportunity to complete at least an additional 4 week block placements across their two year program.
- Equipment and Financial contributions
Students are asked to have access to a device for every lesson to enable collaborative working in class and to access a range of digital resources (iPad’s are not recommended).
Students will be required to purchase a Blackpool Sixth branded polo shirt that must be worn whilst attending placement as well as a DBS. - Field trips, projects and employability opportunities
