No 1 on the Fylde Coast – again!

  • Categories Blog
  • Date January 24, 2019

The 2019 national performance tables for schools and colleges published this morning show that Blackpool Sixth is once again the highest rated provider of A levels and BTECs on the Fylde Coast.

Blackpool Sixth has topped the tables again this year in terms of the progress our students make during their courses and we are only provider on the Fylde Coast to be rated as above the national average overall. We are also in the top 17% of schools and colleges in the country for A levels and in the top 12% for applied general qualifications (BTECs).

Principal Jill Gray commented, “This is a huge testament to the dedication and hard work of our students and staff and to the excellent quality of our teaching, learning and support.  Most important of all is that these figures represent the individual successes of our students and their ability to progress to the next stage whether it be university, higher apprenticeships or other forms of employment with training.”

In August last year Blackpool Sixth students and staff once again celebrated a wonderful set of A level and BTEC Level 3 results against a backdrop of curriculum reforms and more challenging qualifications. Despite the reforms, the overall pass rate was maintained at 99% and significant numbers of students received the highest possible grades in their qualifications. In A level subjects half of students’ grades were high grades (A*, A or B) and in BTEC 88% of students received distinction stars.  48 courses had a 100% pass rate.

There were many very notable individual successes, including eight students taking up their places at Oxford or Cambridge universities and one student winning a fully-paid scholarship to Yale University in the US.  In all, just under 97% of students progressed to university, apprenticeships or employment with training, or other forms of education.
