A Level BUSINESS STUDIES

Welcome to A Level Business Studies.

Have you ever wondered how companies like Apple, McDonalds and Facebook came to be as successful as they are? Or why is it that we continually buy from the same brands time and time again? A Level Business will give you an insight into the inner workings of these successful businesses and look at what makes them tick.

This A Level Business taster session will ask you to recall some of the key events that happened in the year 2020. You will analyse the impact it had on individuals, businesses and the country itself and if the measures used to manage the situation actually worked. You will then act as the Prime Minister and come up with your own policies that you would introduce to help the country out!

A Level COMPUTER SCIENCE

Welcome to A Level Computer Science.

Computer science consists of computer systems, algorithms and programming including a programming project. You will develop problem-solving skills by applying the knowledge and understanding encountered.

A Level ECONOMICS

Welcome to A Level Economics.

Economics describes the factors that determine the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.

You will research and debate issues such as inequality, financial meltdowns and human behaviour and by interpreting data, discuss a range of solutions.

Level 3 in Financial Studies by the LIBF (London Institute of Banking and Finance).

Welcome to Level 3 in Financial Studies.

Understanding personal finance is a practical, life-long skill. You will focus on how to manage money effectively using tools such as budgets and cash flow forecasts. In addition to understanding the technicalities of savings, mortgages and pensions, you will also learn about regulation, consumer protection and the key trends shaping the banking and financial sector.

The Financial Studies taster lesson focuses on the key concept of ‘budgeting’. The main task is to plan your dream 16th birthday party! Then do some research to estimate the cost.

BTEC BUSINESS

Welcome to BTEC Business.

BTEC Business covers many areas including marketing, recruitment, retailing, human resources and employment law. You will have access to careers including management, marketing, events management, entrepreneurship and finance.

This BTEC Business Taster will highlight the skills you will learn on the course and introduce you to the topics covered on each unit. It will also show you how the key skills you gain from taking the BTEC Business course prepare you for the future and lead to apprenticeships/university and the workplace. To finish off you will complete your own Skills Audit to highlight the skills you already have and the ones you need to focus on improving.

BTEC IT

Welcome to BTEC IT.

BTEC IT includes practical tasks and theory, incorporating a wide range of topics including website development , spreadsheets and database design. The course opens the door to careers in IT and business.

There are a wide variety of Units to complete as part of the BTEC IT qualification. In this presentation you will hear how the use of IT is part of many job roles and career paths. Speakers from a variety of job roles will tell you how IT features in their jobs. You will then complete a research task online to find advertised jobs that include the use of IT skills.

Welcome to A Level English Language & Literature (Combined).

If you choose to study our combined course you will enjoy some of the best elements of both English language and literature. We look at how ‘voice’ is created in speech and writing – including studying 20th and 21st Century literature and a modern piece of drama. We also consider the idea of ‘voice’ in non-literary and digital texts too, giving you the chance to study how language functions in the real world. Our second module focuses on studying a range of texts with a shared theme – allowing students to engage with a wide range of literature from different time periods.

Our A level French course will broaden and deepen your knowledge of the French language. BTEC DANCE

Welcome to BTEC Dance.

This course is designed for students who wish to explore and develop their technique, choreography and analytical skills of dance. It provides exploration of a variety of genres and styles including; contemporary dance, jazz dance, post modern dance, pop dance and lyrical dance. BTEC Level 3 Dance is a practically assessed course, and can be taken as either a single course or as a triple course.  Students on the triple course cover the same content as the single course but also take further modules from the BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts course with a dance focus.

Interviews and Advice

Our friendly Admissions team are busy working from home to provide advice and guidance for Year 11 students. If you have not already had an interview to discuss your course choices, please check your email accounts for an invitation to have an interview with one of the team.  The interview will mainly be done through email.

We’ve had great feedback from the South Shore applicants who had their interviews via email “The process was easy and quick” “Thank you very much, I’m looking forward to starting at Blackpool Sixth!”

FYI Library & Resources

The FYi is our fully-equipped Library and Learning Resource Centre

Our state-of-the-art facilities have been carefully designed to aid your learning in a modern and comfortable environment.  You will find a quiet, welcoming library stocked with all the books and magazines you’ll need, both for your courses and for leisure reading.  We strongly encourage all our students to read: we offer a range of book clubs, including manga – and we also encourage you to try writing for yourself in our Creative Writing Group.

Pastoral Support

Strong pastoral care, support and guidance are extremely important in contributing to students’ success. Your pastoral mentor will offer advice and guidance to help you settle in quickly and enjoy your time with us. You will have a weekly tutorial session with your Pastoral Mentor and there are also regular 1:1 meetings, where individual targets are set and reviewed. Your pastoral mentor will also help you to make the right decisions about career choices and applications for higher education or employment, as well as offering the Life Links Programme that aims to provide support and guidance through your time at Blackpool Sixth and prepare you for life after college.

6XTRA PROGRAMME

SPORTS ACADEMIES

6XTRA

Blackpool Sixth offers an extensive extracurricular activity programme called 6Xtra. This programme includes a wide range of sports teams, as well as societies and clubs such as musical theatre, yoga and climbing. It is a great opportunity to further existing interests, take up a new challenge, make new friends and have fun. To find out more about the 6Xtra programme click here.

6advance

6Advance is an exciting range of ‘academies’ designed to enable ambitious students to prepare for university and prestigious future careers. Each 6Advance choice will provide participating students with excellent activities and skills-building to help them go beyond the exam curriculum and apply their knowledge and skills in challenging contexts. In so doing, they will discover more about about a general subject or job area and will build up a great portfolio for applying to highly selective universities or higher apprenticeship programmes. You will develop exceptional employability skills, including, leadership, collaboration and team working, public speaking and confidence. Find out more here.

LGBT+ GROUP

The LGBT Group was set up by a former student who felt that the LGBT+ community did not have a voice in College. When it was created it only started as a small group of students. However, over the past years the group and community has grown and is now part of the 6Xtra programme so every student has the opportunity to join. Find out more about the group here LGBT+ Group

ROUTE3 PROGRAMME

All you need to know about our Route3 Programme

Want to study at Blackpool Sixth but not sure you’ll get the grades you need? We have the ideal option for you. Our ‘Route3’ programme gives you an opportunity to gain your level 3 qualifications over three years instead of two. This is ideal for students who may not quite obtain the grades they need to progress straight into our level 3 programmes when they leave school.
